Stone Town in Swahili is called ”Mji Mkongwe”. It is a historical and old part of Zanzibar city, and the heart of Zanzibar Island. For a number of years, Stone Town was used as a centre for the slave trade. Slaves were obtained from around the Indian Ocean, particularly from mainland Africa and were traded with the Middle East. The town is built on a wedge-shaped/triangular peninsula of land on the western coast of the island.
The history of Stone Town is remarkable part of Zanzibar Island, Tanzania and East African as a whole. The style/build reflects the various influences underlying the Swahili culture and incorporates a characteristic fusion of Indian, Arab, European and African styles.
Stone Town was also used as a centre of trading activities on the East African coast, between Asia and Africa before the colonisation of the mainland in the late 1800’s, after which the attention moved to the coast of Mombasa in Kenya and Dar-es-salaam the industrial city on Tanzania’s Mainland. The main trade product was the exportation of spices such Cloves.
Stone Town was declared as world heritage site by UNESCO in 2000.
The easy and best way to explore Stone Town is on foot, walking through the narrow streets with historical sites and heritage of old Stone Town where history seems to stand still. You will tour the House of Wonders, Freddy Mercury’s House, the Arab Fort, Zanzibar’s busy market, former slave market, Tip Tipp House, winding alleyways, ornately carved and studded doors and balconies, the two Cathedrals, historical Mosques and much more.
Jozani Forest also known as Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park is about 50 km2 located on Zanzibar Island. It’s quite small, however, it is a beautiful place to visit, and the only national park on Zanzibar. One of the “must see” parts of your tour package!
Jozani forest is thought to be a natural pharmacy and truly a magical source of natural medicines. The forest is home for a variety of plants and trees that are used as natural remedies to treat many of the locals!

Zanzibar was once one of the world’s largest producers of spices such as; Cloves, Nutmeg and Cinnamon. The spices put Zanzibar on the map and this tour gives you the chance to learn more about this beautiful island, and its wonderful history.
The guided walking tour will enable you to explore many spices on the islands which are used in most every day cooking. You will walk through spice farms, meet farmers, and sees how spices are grown and cultivated. Masingini forest is located on the western side of Unguja, on Zanzibar island about 8km from the city of Zanzibar, close to Stone Town. The forest is located on the highest peak on the island, which is about 120 meters above sea level. It was established in the 1950s for aims of preserving water sources and soil. It’s famous for its unusual Flora and Fauna (trees/vegetation and animals), and home for over 179 plant types, and habitat for lots of herbs and shrubs that are used in traditional medicine.
Nowadays, Masingini forest is an important part of the water supply for Zanzibar Island particularly in Unguja district, generating large deposits of groundwater. The forest covers 1,374 acres and serves as the main water supply for Old Town Zanzibar and nearby communities. Not like other forests in Zanzibar, Masingini forest has a deep soil rich in nutrients that produces a lush living environment for a wide range of plants and animals species, including the Zanzibar red colobus monkey.
Zanzibar Island is not just about beaches, Masingini forest demonstrates that there are lots other things too. Masingini forest is a large forest close to the city, the forest can be reached on foot, hiking amongst the red colobus, velvet and Sykes monkeys and also a chance to see some ancient trees. It can be accessed without paying money, although to have a lifetime experience and in a safe way, you are advised to pay for a guided tour.
Nakupenda Beach is well-known as a romantic and Lovers Island (Romantic getaway), nakupenda means “I love you” in Swahili. It is located on the island of Unguja in Zanzibar, close to Stone Town, reachable by boat from the City of Zanzibar Island. Nakupenda beach is one of many beaches on Zanzibar Island that has crystal clear blue waters and clean white sand beach, and the island does not get too jammed with tourists compared to other parts of Zanzibar Island. The island is perfect for relaxing while you enjoy the breeze of the Indian Ocean.
Nakupenda Beach Island’s water is perfect for snorkelling and swimming with beautiful underwater scenes, and a beautiful display of colourful coral reefs. When you visit in the morning, you may be able to spot dolphins in the clear blue waters, sunbathing and a chance to taste a wide range of seafood (options), while you relax on the sandy beach. It is a must-see while visiting Zanzibar Island.
Prison Island is also known as the “Changuu” island, the Swahili name of the fish that is common to the island. The island is just about 20 minutes by boat from Stone Town. The island was once used to house violent prisoners/slaves brought from the African mainland to prevent them from escaping before shipping them to Arabian slavers, for auctioning at the Zanzibar slave market.
The island is a tropical paradise which has an abundance of nature and offers stunning views of historical Stone Town. The island is a home to huge tortoises, beautiful clean sandy beach, which you will be able to swim in its beautiful crystal clear waters.
You will enjoy the Oceans nature in and around the coral reefs which surround Prison Island. This will provide you with an opportunity for snorkelling, sunbathing and more. You will also have a chance to visit the Tortoise’s sanctuary, a chance to touch giant tortoises and take some pictures with them. If you are lucky an opportunity to see beautiful Peacocks too.

Nungwi is located in the northern part of Zanzibar Island. The tour involves several interesting things to do, places to visit and see such as the natural aquarium which is a home for endangered sea turtles and many different types of fish. Other activities include a traditional/cultural tour, you will set out on foot walk through an unspoiled village and explore the typical rural lifestyle of it residents, learn some Swahili traditions and Zanzibarian culture. You will see everyday lives and how Zanzibarian villagers make a living.
You will have chance to visit Seaweed farming, fishermen, handcraft workers, weavers using coconut palms and learn how to make ropes from coconut fibre. You will meet local women along the way who also makes a living through pottering, grinding food crops using traditional methods i.e. mortar and pestle. You will see women grinding millet, growing local herbs, cassava, and banana plants. You will also have the opportunity to visit a local school. At the end of the tour you will have time to relax on the white beautiful sandy beach.
