The Marangu route is the oldest and a well-established hiking route on Kilimanjaro and is considered as the most straightforward. It is also one of the most popular routes, due to the fact that it’s the only route that takes you to the summit. It is also the only route that offers sleeping huts (very basic) in dormitory style shelters along the way, provided for climbers/trekkers to share with others rather than camping min tents. You will avoid the rain and wind which makes the route a popular one for hikers climbing Mount Kilimanjaro during the rainy season.
From Marangu Gate to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, then back to Marangu Gate.
Marangu route is famously known as the Tourist route or Coca Cola route. Trekkers can be misled into thinking that it is, a simple path-walk to the summit, however, it is a 5 to 6 days climb.
The Marangu route begins from the south near Marangu town. The route perhaps is not as scenic as other routes, but it offers beautiful features, unspoiled rainforest, and attractive landscapes. The black and white Colobus monkeys are often seen in the mountain forest, and elephants occasionally come across on the highlands.
We have a friendly, dedicated team on-hand with a vast knowledge and first-hand experience on Tours & Safaris. The team is available before, during and after your trip if required.
You will arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), where you will meet our professional and English speaking tour guide, who will welcome you to Tanzania, and make sure that you are ready for the lifetime experience to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. A brief presentation about your trip as whole and then transfer to your accommodation in Arusha or Moshi in Kilimanjaro region.
Early start, after breakfast the trekking team will meet you at your accommodation, and a quick presentation about your trek ahead. We will drive to Marangu gate which is located in the Marangu village. You will carry out the registration to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. You will have local porters who will take charge to carrying all equipment needed for your trekking adventure to Mount Kilimanjaro such as food, drinking water, clothes, and mobile stove gas etc. The porters will also be responsible for preparing and cooking your food all the way up to the summit and back down again.
You will start the first leg of trekking up to Mandara Hut which is about 30 minutes hiking, go through the woods and rainforest, and if you are lucky you may spot Colobus Monkey’s. We recommend you take a spare raincoat, and clothes. The Mandara Hut has sleeping bunks, running water and flushable toilets.
After breakfast, you will continue hiking towards Horombo Hut and you will stop for a picnic lunch. From Mandara hut you will pass through a short stretch of forest and then around the base of the Maundi Crater, you then will leave the forest and enter the moorland. You are recommended that you take a short detour up to the rim of the Maundi Crater, and from there you will be impressed to see the Maundi Crater, and on a clear day you will also be able to see Lake Chala, a great point for taking photos.
In the moorlands, you will also come across some of Kilimanjaro’s most spectacular and extraordinary plants. Later in the afternoon, you arrive at Horombo, dinner on site and overnight stay. Be prepared, the temperatures during the night drop to the freezing point!
After breakfast, you will continue trekking up to Kibo Hut, passing through the last watering point, where you will have a chance to stock up more water. You will walk onto the saddle of Kilimanjaro between the peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo. You will hike slowly through the heathland and enter the alpine desert zone. Due to an increase in altitude, you will take a slow pace to allow time to get acclimatized, but also must pay attention to any signs of altitude sickness. It takes about 5 to 6 hours to reach Kibo Hut where you will rest, as you will need as much strength for the final trek to Kilimanjaro summit. Once you reach the camp at Kibo Hut you will have lunch there. You are recommended that you go to bed early and have as much sleep as you can and drink plenty water. You have dinner and overnight stay. The temperature at night sometimes drops to below freezing.
This is the last leg, where you will push for the final ascent to Uhuru Peak. You will be assisted to prepare yourself mentally as well as physically! You will be woken up around 23:30 hours to get ready for midnight start the hike to the summit. You will have something light to eat (a cup of tea/coffee with biscuits/fruits etc.). Just around midnight we will start trekking up to the summit of Kilimanjaro. This will be, by far, the toughest day. You will trek up through a rocky path, you will take a short rests as you climb up. It is likely you will walk through snow for about 2 hours, and reach the amazing summit of Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. You will see a spectacular view at this point, it is unforgettable and a lifetime experience.
You will have great joy reaching the summit, and take as many photos as you want. From the summit, we get moving again, as it is a long way down! The first part of the descent to Kibo Hut will take almost another 3 hours, you will be ready for breakfast and then descend to Horombo Hut, stopping for lunch and a rest at Kibo and then continuing onto the Horombo Hut campsite.
Our last day on the Mountain will start after breakfast, it is time also to thank the entire team behind this trek. We will start walking back down to lower elevations through the forest, the path could be quite wet and muddy, so hiking poles and gaiters could come in handy. You will stop at Mandara Hut for lunch, and then continue trekking down, passing through villages and plantations on the slopes down to the Marangu gate, this takes almost 6 hours. Once you arrive at Marangu gate, you will sign out and your guide team will organise the official certificate for your great achievement, and you will be rewarded with a summit certificate.
The driver will meet you at Marangu Gate, and then transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi/Arusha where you have undoubtedly earned a good hot shower, a few drinks, refreshments and more to celebrate your achievement, and have a good rest in a comfortable room.
After breakfast, this will depend on your flight schedule to return to your home country or a trip to Zanzibar, or the driver will drive you back to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your departure, or transfer you to the agreed departure location, and this brings to an end of your trekking adventure in Kilimanjaro.
