Mount Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro is African’s highest and the tallest free-standing mountain in the world, at 5,895 metres (19,341) above sea level and about 4,900 metres above its plateau base. Mount Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano in Tanzania (has not erupted in a long time but it could erupt again in the future, who knows!). It has three volcanic cones, Kibo, Mawenzi and Shira. Taking the longer route will mean you are more likely to be successful in reaching the summit, as it will give you more time to acclimatise and adapt to the challenging altitude. It will also be less exhausting for you too!

There are several routes which lead to the Peak however, Tanzibar Tours uses the 3 best routes: Marangu, Machame and Lemosho route.

5 Days / 4 Nights Marangu Route

The Marangu route is the oldest and a well-established hiking route on Kilimanjaro and is considered as the most straightforward. It is also one of the most popular routes, due to the fact that it’s the only route that takes you to the summit.

7 Days / 6 Nights Machame Route

Machame route is a seven day camping route which gives you more time to acclimatize. It was known as the “Whiskey Route” in the past due to its tougher challenge. It is the second most popular route , but scenically, a beautiful trail.

8 Days / 7 Nights Lemosho Route

Lemosho route is considered the most beautiful trail of all trekking routes on Kilimanjaro. It is excellent in acclimatization; you will climb through all climate zones from alpine fields to ascend to the arctic zone, with fewer climbers on the footpath than Marangu and Machame routes.
